KR4 Mapping in process
This week, we made 2 field trips to Kranji mangrove to map our study site, which covers some parts of the KR4 mangroves which is near to the Kranji Nature Trail.
The first mapping was done on 5/1/2004 during low tide in the evening. 6 of us worked from 3 to 6pm that day. The center leg of the KNT bridge 2 was our first fixed point. Subsequently we mapped the area by taking distance and bearing from point to points. However one mistake that we made was the lack of fixed points for future easy tracking. I was in charged of taking bearings by using compass and Fiona recorded the readings via a sketched map. We mapped one of the main streams and some sidebars and eventually linked back to the KNT.
On the following Wednesday, 7/1/2004, with the volunteer of 2 guys (Mingsheng and Huaqin), we mapped from the carpark, across the prawn ponds and back to one of the fixed points (xylocarpus) from the previous trip. This time round, we had to find our way amongst the mud lobster mounds, cut through old trails and bash through thick back mangroves. Work lasted from 1.30pm to 5pm. Special thanks to Mingsheng and Huaqin for doing the difficult jobs of recce-ing through tough areas and also for their patience since measurements and recordings take a bit time.
