in the high supralittoral sand zone. It is able to absorb water from wet sand by means of special hairs at the base of its legs by capillary action and hence does not need to return to the water.
They scavenge and hunt small animals and shellfish by the water fringe. They are fast runners, with excellent vision. The most common species, O. ceratophthalma, has a characteristic horn on its eye, but another more terrestrial species, O. cordimana has smooth oval eyes. (Width 6-8cm).
