Mussel
Shrimps These resemble miniature bivalves but their limbs are jointed. They are filter feeders. Some are able to generate a blue light when disturbed. This can be seen in the wake of boats travelling at night or when they are washed on the shore by waves. In the Second World War, they were collected, ground up, and used as a light source by Japanese soldiers. Noctiluca, a protozoa, also produces bioluminescence. |
