Family Haliotidae

Cold or temperate relatives of this algal feeding genus are highly valued as food, "abalone steaks" being one of the most expensive items in the market.

Abalones are primitive snails, and can easily be recognised by their flattened shells and the spiral row of holes on one side which allows water to exit after bathing the gills. In New Zealand, polished pieces of abalone shells are sold as jewellery. (Shell 3-5cm).
