Calcified Algae
Family Codiaceae

These are calcified algae growing on rocks and sand.
Avrainvillea is common near reefs.

The fan-like structure is actually the thallus (body) and the holdfast (foot) reaches deep into the soft substrate (height 15cm including holdfast).

Halimeda has green lobes which are flattened and oval, each being 1 to 2cm in breadth.

The sponge-like Codium which grows on rocks, is irregularly shaped and reaches sizes of 8 to 15cm.
