ICCS: West Coast Park Recce
Rashmi & Chen Kee, 23 July 2004: morning

Date of Recce: 23rd July 2004, Friday
Time of Recce: 8.45am ~ 10.00 am
Tide: 0.28m, low tide at 8.53am

The cleanup beach at West Coast Park is defined into 2 sites separated by the lookout point.

Site 1:
Site 1 is on the left side of the lookout point facing the sea. (Refer to map.) It can be accessed from the left side of the lookout point. It has a sandy beach with small patches of mangrove trees. Site 1 has a light to medium trash load, comprises mainly of small plastics. Estimates of 20 to 30 participants from age 14 and above are suitable to clean up the site in 2 hours time.

Potential hazards will arise if it is high tide as the strand line is quite inland. Also evacuation of rain in case of heavy rain could be difficult as there is only one narrow exit point. (Access A)

Site 2:
Site 2 is the beach from the right side of the lookout point to the other end of the park. However the extreme right end of the beach is a boatyard that is potentially dangerous for a cleanup as such it is left out of the site, though it is the same beach.

The coastline is deem dangerous by N’Parks as such a huge proportion of the beach is fenced up, resulting in only 3 access point (B, C and D) to Site 2.

Trash load at the site ranges from medium to heavy that comprises largely of plastic containers and plastic sheets mingled with ropes and natural sea vegetation. This site can accommodate 200 to 250 participants preferably age 14 and above with knowledge of differentiating natural items from trash.

Conclusion
The beach at West Coast Park will be easy to clean and suitable to have a secondary school batch to do. Trash is from recreational activities in the park and also boatyard and shipyard activities.
